Wherever crew choose to do basic training and whatever they pay it is a lot of money when you don’t have a job! Quite simply, you need a job to pay for basic training and you need basic training to get a job! So do you REALLY need to do basic training or is this a myth that no-one has thought to challenge?

To get a job in the industry, they do ask for qualifications, which does cost money, and even the most experienced sailors out there can't work in the trade without those qualifications. Catch 22 situation, I know, as holding a bit of paper doesn't always mean someone knows what they're doing. Had experience of this only a few months back, where someone that was supposedly qualified as competent crew was the most incompetent person aboard, and we came close to losing a man over the side because of his actions. Personally, not a great lover of qualifications, but the trade requires them, and until they change the rules, we are stuck with it.

A great way to gain experience at a low cost is to get involved with boat deliveries - you will not gain qualifications but you will gain a huge amount of experience and a wealth of knowledge that can not be taught on courses.
