I think we have seen more of the opposite, is moorings fail with boats heading off out to sea on their own. There was one season a few years ago where it happened a lot by us. Wake up in the morning to see some boat looking like its badly anchored but is in fact caught up in someone else's mooring. Scary! There are regularly boats anchored near us round the corner from Barn Pool as the ground is thick mud and holding is excellent. Never seen one drag there even in strong winds. One boat spent a season anchored there even though the owner didn't live aboard it!
Quite a few people we have met have said they would trust their ground tackle more than an unknown mooring - I think there is a lot of sense in that. I may mock up a 20kg rocna in cardboard to see if it will fit under the bowsprit with the roll bar. It may just sneak in under the platform ( which is too nice to modify). The chain will also have to be hooked out of the way of the bobstay to avoid scraping. Being long keel the boat often wants to lie more to tide than wind and doesn't veer around half as much in a blow as previous boats have. All good tips from you btw, got me thinking about expanding our options. Cheaper certainly appeals to me - spending a fortune at the moment on visitor moorings when we go away.

Separate question - can you post photos on here? Sometimes a picture paints a thousand words, or do you have to have a flickr\photo bucket account and link to that?

At the moment pictures will have to be hosted elsewhere and embedded I'm afraid. Or I could pm you my email address but there'll be a delay before it's uploaded.

But I think from your description that your roller is at the aft end of your bowsprit unlike ours which is right near the other end.

We solve the bob stay chafe issue by using a large bridle which also lowers the attachment point effectively, reducing our rode required for the right ratio. Bowsprits are not usually designed to take extreme transverse loads so why our roller is on the end I have no idea, bit I'm not complaining as it means we can have the Rocna.

I guess to have the rollbar under your sprit you'd need to elevate the shank. Might work. Did you see how we ended up with our Rocna 15 on Isabella?

Piplers can't be far away from you can they? Buy one from them online, but collect it. They then will have to offer a 14 day distance selling refund... But they'd probably let you do that anyway. Much better than a cardboard template.

That's awesome to hear someone literally parked their boat at anchor! Did they have an automatic light or just not bother at all?

Bad winds on the way tomorrow. We will be testing our Rocna in the fal estuary tomorrow night I think. Turnaware point has been recommended on ybw.

OK, here we go. This should be the bowsprit photo, or an epic IT fail resulting in considerable public humiliation!

WTF? Where has the slide show come from?

Hope it's gone now!

Third time's a charm!

See what you mean, it might just fit hey! Also see it's way too nice of a sprit to hack at!

Obviously a spade would fit perfectly. But a Rocna is cheaper and IMO has a better chance of penetrating deep as the actual blade has smaller volume for a particular penetrated depth of tip.

Bridle would need to be secured further aft than any of the cleats in your picture of course.

And another shot from underneath. Assuming you are looking at a 20kg Delta tucked up under there, how much room does the roll bar take up?

No stopping me with the photos now! You might want to shut the forum down!

BTW, the anchored boat showed no lights but was tucked up well out of the way.

The more the merrier (photos)

Your hull lines look similar to towser's in that shot. Nice.

Looks like much less space when looking from below, but the shank shape I suspect will make a bit of a difference between Rocna and delta.

The rollbar is not small but projects aft of a line perpendicular with the plane of the anchoring surface. Suspect that info isn't much use. Borrow one from Piplers?

Link v useful. I don't think it will fit though - shame! Piplers a bit too far away for me (3 hours) but I might see if I can borrow one for a trial fit when we get lifted from another boat in the yard. Someone must have one! Hope you are tucked up away from the winds somewhere nice! 8)

Ah sorry, go the wrong location :)

Ah well, spade it is then?

We're OK just north of Turnaware Point on the Fal. Winds hardly touched us here. I had 50m chain out and our full bridle, in average 7m water. We were ready for what it chucked. I was looking forward to it :(

Now on boat. Very strange weather. Couple of people said the storm last night was spectacular - a lightening firework show. Seems like it may have passed you by. Awaiting the evening rain - too humid for it not to happen.

I think it happened, but we chose a perfect spot to hide. Lightning was spectacular indeed. Firing off every few minutes for an hour or two.

How long are you aboard? Where are you headed?

Check out mevagissey and Gorran haven, they're lovely.

Alas, weekend warriors again! Maybe a week next month some time but no real plans as yet - perhaps Mevagissey?

Just had a Spitfire doing some practice acrobatics over the boat - but don't recall any kind of air show this weekend. Just starting the first few spits of rain - but we are tucked up in the cockpit tent. Thundery showers forecast for tonight so maybe an encore of the lightening?
Are you heading in to town for supplies at any point? Don't know why but I just love sitting on the quay in Falmouth, or even outside the chain locker and watching the world go by. Never a dull moment.

How does Luna like the thunder and lightening? We had some lightening at home in the early hours but it must have been a long way off as the thunder was barely audible. Cat slept under the bed. Not a fan! :o

We watched a spitfire doing aerobatics over Falmouth a couple of hours ago. Same one? Strange coincidence.

Lunar starts ok with thunder and fireworks bit as time goes in gets more and more stressed. But she was ok with last nights for some reason.

We're anchored off st just in roseland for a few nights now I think. Falmouth visible in the distance, as is Mylor. Readers digest book of excellent uk coastal spots very keen on st just so it must be good.
