The perfect gift?

Dear All, I am sorry to invade your forum but I am in dire need of some advice! I need to buy a present for a keen sailor. I have ~£600 to spend and it needs to be engraved from our company as he is leaving to start a new venture. As he is changing direction I thought a compass may be appropriate but I welcome any suggestions!
Thanks very much!

A brass sextant would be wonderful. Not something most people would ever be able to justify buying for themselves, but yet an inspirational and beautiful thing to have, that has real use... I searched on Google for a good one though with little joy.

Failing that, what Terry said, or a weems and Plath sensitive barometer.

Or a nice brass paraffin lamp.

I would go with a good quality paraffin lamp and a navigation set (see link below). You could add a brass plate to the navigation box with the engraving of your choice. Your budget may even stretch to a lamp, clock and Nav set!
